“Hmm. Let’s do something of Ai again” I said to myself. So I got this song which I heard a lot about, but never really took the time to listen to.

Planetarium

Planetarium” (プラネタリウム; puranetariumu) is Ai Otsuka’s tenth single, which was released on September 21, 2005. The single had great success and became Otsuka’s second #1 hit on the Oricon charts, selling 316,425 copies. In 2005, Planetarium sold 215,114 copies, making it the #41 best-selling single of the year. However, it still charted into the next year and was the #99 best-selling single in 2006, selling 100,555 copies. Planetarium is her second best-selling single after “Sakuranbo.”

Planetarium

It last for 5 minutes and 11 seconds and doesn’t bore you. It starts with rather mysterious, traditional drums, soon followed by the piano and a flute instrument. And then Ai sings, beautiful lyrics if I can trust the translation and the Japanese sounds cute. I read the song sounded too much like Rikki’s Suteki Da Ne. I have to disagree, lots of songs sound alike. Around the 3.25 the guitar has a small, awesome solo. And then it can shut up again for a while. I also liked the fireworks sound. The song ends with soothing ‘Ah’s. It has a nice flow and I can’t really say something bad about it. I’m starting to get into Ai!

Drop

Okay, so, after listening to that emotional song, I was excited to know what was awaiting me now. I didn’t expect such a poppy happy song. With a nice beat and guitar chords through it. Ai’s voice bothers me a bit here. But it is still a nice song! It’s like this is a happy end to the sad song previous. But it’s not very amazing. A nice radio song. Hearing this song will make you happy and peppy again.

Planetarium (instrumental)

Gah, how pretty. Without the lyrics and Ai’s cute voice I still can feel the emotions. What great arrangement! I really need to learn to sing this song, so I can cover it whenever I dare to.

Drop (instrumental)

Cute at its best! This song is giving me motivation to learn to play guitar again, it is basic, simple and very cute.

CD Tracklist

  1. Pocket (ポケット)
  2. Ticket (チケット)
  3. LIFE – LOVE CiRCLE
  4. Pocket (Instrumental) (ポケット)
  5. Ticket (Instrumental) (チケット)

Pocket is the 16th single released by Otsuka Ai, released on the 17th of November 2007.

Pocket

Starting off with the piano, the ballad starts. Otsuka Ai sings very emotionally and after a while on a quite high level. And the instruments are well arranged. Though, the song isn’t very original, ballads are always the same, but this song is defiantly worth the listen.

But these lyrics aren’t very original either.

kawarukoto shiranai
atashi no kimochi wa
kono saki nan nen tatta toshite mo
anata wo itoshiku omotte
sotto ai wo fukameruwa

My feelings,
Don’t know about a thing such as change.
However many short years ago it may have been
I always thought dearly about you.
Secretly, my love deepens.

The pocket theme is nice. It’s quite original and creative. It also adds a cute-ness to the song.

The song ends with very, very, beautiful piano notes.

It’s a beautiful ballad, but a normal ballad, with a somewhat original lyric twist.

Ticket

High piano chords and a nice beat with cute guitar chords: that’s how Ticket starts and I love it! It sounds kind of summer-like. After a few booms and a chiek of the drums, Otsuka Ai starts to sing lovely and adorable by the way. This song is much happier and upbeat than the winter ballad. High notes are played continuously. This song just makes you want to squeal ‘KAWAIII’ like some weaboo/otaku.

And I like the lyrics of this song.

Cutie na mood ni cool na you
hoppe ni tsun’ toshite beat ni waku waku
youi shite konya wa kira kira

You are so cute in your cool mood
Cheek twitches excitedly with the tune
I’m just preparing things so that tonight will sparkle

LIFE – LOVE CiRCLE

This song is very upbeat and happy-peppy-YAY-like and so are the lyrics.

Love the arrangement of the instruments, especially the guitar solo! But I really really really detest songs that cannot be sung with a proper English accent.

Or let’s say without a Japanese/Dutch/whatever accent.

The song sound cute though. But that’s all.
